forgot to sterilize!

i made an incredibly stupid mistake and thought that i had sterilized the primary fermentor when in fact i had not! i'm fully prepared to toss the batch and start again but when i talked to the local winemaking store they said to just leave it and sterilize really well when i syphon it into the carboy -- i'm not sure about that. any suggestions?
