It would be misleading to say that you cannot make
good beer with dry yeast. That said, there are
numerous things you can do to improve the beer you
brew, and switching to liquid yeast was one of the
earliest modifications I did that made the biggest
difference in my product. As well, as Bill
pointed out, some beer styles are impossible to
brew without the proper liquid yeast culture.
Keep in mind, though, that liquid cultures require
a little more work (extremely sanitary handling
and the use of yeast starters, for example).
